PB9 restore
The PB 9 international arrived, This was the first Serpent model to be made and the first nitro car I bought 29 years ago, It's also the actual Serpent I owned back then too, now freaky is that? I know because I made all the alloy parts at school, servo mounts, body post's and nylon fuel tank post's too, I can still remember drilling the servo mount hole slightly out of line
It's in a mess, most of it will need parts made as PB went out of business years ago, I found a website that can help track down parts for it but I can make most of what's needed but a new set of wheels and tyres will be necessary.
here's some pix of how it looks.
A little progress:
Got the mid section started,
The rear wheels look like this, chipped edges and scratched.
After the rim edge was cut back 2mm and T cut inside, these are 1/8 stock car foam tyres, a perfect fit, the front foams will need cutting to length and the outside diameter will have to be ground down 5mm.
A little progress:
Just got these nice sheets of hand made glass fibre from Razor, he sent two different shades so I could chose the one closest to the original chassis colour, didn't charge me for them either, what a top bloke.
got the front chassis plate cut:
Time to sort the diff out:
One of the cars previous owners thought it a good idea to use pipe grips on the diff to remove the spur holder!!!!!
Only thing to do here is turn it down on the lathe
The gears are in perfect condition (result) here are the internal parts
Here's the PB9 half built, looking good if I do say so myself, talk about dayjavoo, lol lol
The engine was $174 with postage and I'm waiting for a price on the other stuff.
The new 30 year old OPS
Just got this vintage radio off tyler, he found it clearing a house, lol
It's new and never been used, the servo's are so slow it takes 2 seconds for them to go from EP to EP, lol lol
got the front hubs sorted with new bearings and cleaned up, servo mounts cleaned and fitted and all the black plastic resurfaced and shinny:
Got the roll bar supports, engine mounts, brake caliper, tank mounts and servo mounts restored and fitted:
The tie rods have had it:
I cut down some savage rods to make new ones:
I also dropped all the parts in caustic that are going to the anodisers
Not only did I get the brand new 30 year old OPS, I also got in the engine box:
1 new crankshaft, 2 yes two P&Liner sets, 1 new con rod and 1 new exhaust adapter (I didn't have a clue where I would get the exhaust adapter, lol)
Just take a look at that 30 year old carb, lol
Got the diff parts back from the anodisers, they did a super job matching the gold and yes I know the bearing holders where originally black but I wanted them blue (it's my car isn't it?), the rest of the diff parts where cleaned up.
Diff fitted with new spur gear, I don't know what material the brake disc is made from but it's still newish so I put it back in, the exhaust fitted with re-anodised black top and new 90deg nipple.
First fitting for the shell, looks well nice I think.
Oh dear, look at the bumpers. the back one is the wrong material too, should be white nylon as the front lol
Ok, one sheet of 3mm rylon masked up and ready for cutting,
This is how we fitted the front bumpers back then, fit the body and mark round it.

Right, had a few problems fitting a new flywheel and clutch, this picture shows how big the old flywheel and clutch bell is compared to today's items
I'll have to refit the old flywheel and clutch bell.
I skimmed the flywheel and re-knurled the edge on the lathe
This is the original clutch set up,
I'll never find these shoes so I got a set of Traxxas ones, they needed modifying to fit but should work ok
So, engine fitted with cleaned up original clutch bell and I made a new Handel from silver steel
Nice new exhaust coupler
The next problem to sort out is the missing rear body posts, at some point this car was fitted with four lower radio mounting posts:
It should look like this with longer posts at the back to support the body:
One piece of 12mm nylon round bar,
Ten minutes on the lathe and we have new rear posts,

Got the brake unit sorted.
This was how it looked
I made new pads
I cleaned and freed up all the moving parts, the brake is now in working order, just the linkages to do.
I made an ariel holder from some alloy bar
And started fitting the radio gear, this is how the reciever mounts, one balloon, two rubber bands and some leccy tape (high tech in those days, lol)
Got the throttle and brake linkages fitted.

Here's the PB finished, I used an old style battery holder with 4 Duracell batteries, We didn't use switches back in the day so I fitted Traxxas type plug, The fuel tank has been cleaned and fitted but I'll keep looking for a new one to replace it.
Just the shell to paint now.
Just noticed I need to make some alloy buttons to go on top of the front radio mounting post's.
