Phil Booth's 1979 world champion replica car

Message par nodo » 21 Fév 2014, 21:19

Dear friends, I finally managed to complete my new project, an almost perfect replica of the PBS that Phil Booth took to win the 1979 world title.

I wish to thank this people that help me with the project:
Emmanuel Boulmé and Xavier from France for the original photos of Phil Booth's car

Simone Zanon for reproducing the decals
Thomas Brisighella for painting the body
Massimo Poldi for many bits and pieces

and

Simone Mannelli for the almost perfect model to start the project

Thanks a lot ! Im very happy to see the real car of P. Booth because there are very few pictures of this car at World Championship.
And also your Replica, very good job ;-)
Only two question :
- I am surprised by the body because on the pictures on the podium at Genève (in advertising for example), we see a Parma body, not a 917/30 ?
- in second, do you know exactly what carburetor he used ?

Thank you, the body I used is from Delta Platic. To be hones once I have seen the Delta Plastic version, I thought it was very similar, apart from the pilot.

The carburator was not the PB, because you can see in the picture that it looks like the original OPS first type.
When I will take the rest of the pictures, you can see it on my replica car.

I only realised now that you think that Booth used a different body for the final.
I have this picture here of the start of the final:

Image

This PB looks to have the 917/30 body, is this Phil Booth's or Martin's ?

Phil Booth's mechanic , you recognised him from number 6, Phil's starting position in the final , looks like is looking exactly at this car. In my oppiniom is Phil's.

starting grid:
1 Ishihara
2 Rold
3 Ton
4 Jianas
5 Husting
6 Booth
7 Phelps
7 Sassida
9 Davis
10 Martin

For GuidonJr

I had a message today from Piero Muzio (Mr OPS) and he told me that the carburetor was a "Piston PB"

he also confirmed that the body shell is the one pictured and replicated by myself.
He made some pictures soon after the final and also a poster for the OPS engines.

I hope to get some original documentation and I will post it for everybody to share.

ciao

Great car .. i've been gathering the parts for a similar replica myself. These include the Dave Preston carburetor/remote needle that can be seen on the second scan below. Dave Preston was Phil Booth's pitman at Geneva. If you haven't seen them before you'll find these race reports from the time very interesting. If anyone could confirm the dimensions of the Phil Booth special chassis I'd much appreciate it.
Cheers Nick

Thank for all the pictures, it is always interesting to discover things forgotten or never seen.
For the carburetor, it confirms what I thought, we can say that this is an option/prototype, probably starting point for future carburetor PB.
For the body, I'm always surprised... I'll get a picture that I know and you tell me what you think.

I'm sorry, but on this picture (from Nick), we see perfectly well that the body is a Kroll Parma…
Although, shortly after, PB will be inspired to do the Shadow body found on PB9S.
Tonight, I would put a better color photo.
Image
It's also possible that Phil don't run in race with this body and only use for this picture (and Parma !)… I don't know ;-)

Bonjour

According to Mr Muzio from OPS, this is the winning car. The Body looks like a Kroll from Parma, but it is Painted in a different way.

I will go to Milan and try to find out more, expecially under the body....

For now I think that most probably the correct one is the one in GuidonJr's picture

Thank you for your help
